Camino de Santiago
The Camino de Santiago is an ancient Christian pilgrimage route that attracts visitors from all over the world. Editor Wai-Lun Tsang, from ShootCut.TV, completed the pilgrimage and
filmed the event using the GY-HM100.
“I’m currently walking with – and
filming – pilgrims across Spain, starting from St. Jean Pied du Port, over the Pyrenees, all the way to Santiago,” Wai-Lun explains. “The short documentary examines some of the
physical, mental and spiritual demands of walking the route and, for me, taking part in the 500 mile pilgrimage was just as important as filming it. The main reason for using the
GY-HM100, purchased from Creative Video, was its small size and weight. Walking alongside other people for 10-12 hours a day, and stopping, starting and running with a backpack, meant
that carrying as little weight as possible was essential.” Despite its compact size, all of the camcorder’s main functions are directly accessible from strategically-placed
controls. This allows for comfortable usage, especially important on longer shoots.
“The camera’s small size not only makes it easier to carry, but discreet as well”, Wai-Lun says. “People are more likely to open up and casually answer questions in front of a
smaller camcorder. Thankfully the GY-HM100 still delivered professional results. The focus assist feature has been a revelation, useful on such a compact camera, and something I wish
all cameras had.”
The twin SDHC card slots on the camcorder provided Wai-Lun with a reliable and cost-effective storage solution. It meant he didn’t need to worry about running out of media, as the
camcorder just switches to the second card when the first is full. “Shooting on SD cards was a fantastic bonus” Wai-Lun explains.
“The standard workflow I deal with day to day was a typical offline/online workflow, digitising various tape formats, editing, then conforming and finishing. My workflow has been
simplified with the GY-HM100, as now QuickTime clips can be copied and backed up straight onto the hard drive and dragged directly into Final Cut Pro™. Using SD cards gave me
confidence that any footage I captured was safe and glitch-free, and I love the how diminutive and robust the format has been.”
